The History of ServiceMaster Clean®
ServiceMaster Clean was founded in Chicago in 1929. Marion E. Wade, a former minor league baseball player, started this moth-proofing business out of his home, which eventually grew into the janitorial and cleaning company that ServiceMaster is today. Wade’s personal faith and desire to honor God translated into his marketing strategies, where he saw each individual employee and customer deserving of dignity and respect. Upon inheriting ServiceMaster, successors Ken Hanson and Ken Wessner shared Wade’s faith-driven business philosophies. Wade, Hanson and Wessner’s leadership eventually shaped what became ServiceMaster’s company objectives: (diagram)
In addition to moth-proofing, ServiceMaster Clean quickly expanded to offer carpet cleaning services. Shortly thereafter, its services grew to include a variety of cleaning programs. With over 4,500 franchises offering a variety of cleaning and restoration services, ServiceMaster Clean has janitorial and restoration solutions for any kind of facility. Today, the ServiceMaster Family of Brands currently operates Termini, Trugreen, American Home Shield, Merry Maids, AmeriSpec and Furniture Medic.
On April 1, 1984, Steve Losorwith, a vice president for Seafirst Bank, purchased the ServiceMaster of Seattle (SOS) franchise. Although the business had been around for two decades, it was small, employing only five people. A year later, on April 1, 1985, the company had grown so much that Steve joined forces with Wes Mitchell, the regional franchise operations manager for ServiceMaster, to incorporate as L & M Services, Inc. d.b.a. ServiceMaster of Seattle.
The business continued to grow and by 1987, Wes and Steve were running the largest on location cleaning franchise in the country. Over the course of the next 15 years, SOS grew to be one of the premier franchises in the ServiceMaster family. In 2002, Michael Mack and Dan Olson purchased L & M Services Inc. d.b.a ServiceMaster of Seattle from Wes and Barb Mitchell. And in 2006, the company expanded even more when it added the Snohomish and Island County franchises.
Most recently, on October 1st, 2010 the ServiceMaster of Seattle family grew to include ServiceMaster Professional Clean (SPC) in Yakima. Al Martinson, the former owner of SPC, had a long-term business relationship with Mike Mack and Dan Olson, and hand-picked SOS to purchase their franchise. The owners retired and ServiceMaster of Seattle acquired an established business with a great reputation in the two counties it services, Yakima and Kittitas. Most of the tenured staff chose to stay with SPC and are helping to grow the business. The acquisition of ServiceMaster Professional Cleaning allows ServiceMaster of Seattle to service a larger area and more customers.
Our four operating divisions include our insurance repair divisions: on-location fire restoration, water mitigation and drying services, packing, cleaning, and storage (PCS), and our commercial cleaning and janitorial services. and ServiceMaster of Seattle acquired an established business with a great reputation in the two counties it services, Yakima and Kittitas.
In our efforts to provide the best service possible, we are an Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certified business. The IICRC is the leading accreditation organization within the restoration industry. All of our restoration project managers are AHERA-certified building inspectors and each of them maintains their IICRC Applied Structural Drying certification. In addition, we have several Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) CMR-Certified Mold Restorers, ITC Certified Thermographers and Six Sigma Yellow and Green Belts. Additionally, our Building Services team members are concerned about our environment, so each of the team’s managers has been Green Seal 42 certified. On top of that, we have implemented our proprietary Capture and Removal Green Cleaning System for commercial janitorial cleaning.
Everyone here at ServiceMaster Professional Cleaning strives to provide the communities we live in with the best possible service and to be honorable and forthright while we do it. We have been succeeding at this since 1984, and look forward to serving King, Snohomish, Island, Kittitas, and Yakima Counties for many years to come.
